What is a smart city?

What does the future look like to you?  Is it a buzzing metropolitan area with flying cars, spaceports, and skyscrapers? What technologies fall under the “IoT”?

According to the UN, 68% of the world population will live in Urban by 2050. By remotely monitoring bus fleets, cities are able to inform citizens of by-the-second updates of the location of buses and the expected wait times; allowing users of the bus services to better plan, access and inform of delays or service interruptions.

Self-driving/autonomous vehicles will also play a large role in smart city services. Some smart cities may use fully autonomous buses, and taxis run its transport infrastructure. Self-driving cars owned privately by citizens may be able to receive traffic information and live updates to avoid busy or congested areas, alleviating traffic autonomously. Autonomous lorries may also take over for freight and haulage allowing 24/7 shipment of goods between cities and all over the world.

One such city taking the lead in innovation is Shenzhen in China. To those in-the-know, Shenzhen is themanufacturing capital of the world where most of goods and products consumed by the world populations are produced. A port city, Shenzhen makes electronics for some of the biggest names in the game such as Apple, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, BYD, Huawei, Tencent, ZTE, and Foxconn. Shenzhen has set out an action plan to become smart in various fields, including education, healthcare, housing, social security, and transportation.

Shenzhen is the leading Chinese city for smart transportation. According to Deloitte LLP, Shenzhen is the best-performing city in China in terms of deployment of intelligent traffic lights, grids, and traffic.  The city of Shenzhen is also implementing Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in order to improve road safety, communications, and peer efficiency. For example, using technologies to identify images of traffic violators with 95 percent accuracy, the report said.


How will Smart City Tech affect Logistic and Manufacturing in China?

Many foresee the emerging smart technologies in Shenzhen, China will translate into benefits for manufacturers, startups, and businesses?
