ResearchOur clients sometimes do not have sufficient expertise to thoroughly benchmark the marketplace for their products. Having a clear view of the marketplace allows us to tailor design and technology solutions that are best placed to achieve market success. Key research activities include;
![]() Industrial Concept DesignOur industrial design team transform the clients brief into a visual representation. This key stage in the product development process precedes the detailed design and engineering phase. It is also sometimes used to convey ideas in a business plan. We have an international team who understand market trends in the key global markets. The typical things we look at in the Industrial Design phase are as follows;
![]() EngineeringAs product engineers and system integrators, we transform design concepts using market specific technologies to meet, and often exceed, performance, cost and quality objectives. We use a process–driven approach which focuses on a staged product development plan, from design through to manufacture. We utilise a digital development process to reduce production risks. Fundamentally, our knowledge of the commercial, manufacturing and technical priorities to bring new products to market, is the added value we bring. Some of the key areas of expertise we bring include;
![]() PrototypingIt is our aim to minimise the number of prototypes we need during product development, thus keeping the project time plan as short and low cost as possible. We do this by investing in the digital engineering process, putting additional resources in to engineer the product from the outset. Any prototypes we do construct always have a clear design validation purpose, and are not for the trialling of ideas. There are different types of design validation that prototypes are needed for. Sometimes strict performance requirements mean that we need a prototype with the right mechanical physical properties for testing. Other times it is the aesthetic features which are being assessed so the paint finish and textures are more important. Whatever the reason, we can choose from a wide range of prototyping processes to ensure we get something that is fit for purpose. In China, we have access to a wide range of quality prototyping facilities that produce western quality products at prices lower than can be achieved in western countries. Here are just some of the processes we can use
![]() Testing and ValidationOur designers have a range of digital tools available to them when engineering new products to meet specific geometry, kinematics and performance standards. We also utilise more advanced digital design analysis for complex engineering projects. When it comes to compliance testing, we typically use an internationally recognised test facility in Hong Kong. Through this company we have access to a wide range of test facilities both for product development and when we need to comply with international standards; BS, CE marks etc. Here are just some examples of the tests we perform
![]() QualityAt Detekt, everyone knows that quality starts with design. Our team of industrial designers are well versed on designing for manufacture here in China. Our engineering team develop our clients work through the design development phase using advanced CAD software, calculating and developing designs with appropriate performance and functionality, and which can be reliably manufactured and assembled.Managing quality throughout the project is done using the product development process, where all aspects of the final product are tracked against the design brief. If you are considering manufacturing in China, we can perform factory audit and quality inspection services on your behalf, directly in the factory. At the stage when your product is ready for production, we can use our PPAP process to oversee the commissioning of tooling, manage small changes necessary to meet your quality expectations, and assess sample parts and ongoing production quality, Project ManagementWe use our streamlined project management process which is suited to small and medium sized projects, with a medium level of complexity. We also have a series of more involved project management tools we can draw on, often suitable where there are complex technical requirements, or due to the shear number of parts involved. As a guide, the streamlined process is used where the engineering project is less than US$250k. Our streamlined 6-stage project management process shown below, includes project planning and regular internal design reviews, and client reviews at the end of each stage;Stage 1 – Research Stage 2 – Concept Design Stage 3 – Design Development Stage 4 – Prototyping Stage 5 – Manufacturing Documentation Stage 6 – Manufacturing For more complex projects where greater controls are necessary to manage the project deliverables, we will recommend some of the following additional project management tools; Optimised project planning for critical short lead time manufacturing Engineering Performance Property Management run by dedicated project manager. A 5-stage drawing release procedure useful for additional development prototype phases (ETRS), and for early release of design data to accelerate tooling manufacture. Defining product specifications at system and individual part level Component and System level DFMEA (Design, Failure, Modes, Effect, Analysis) Digital engineering design and validation process using advanced engineering tools Live BOM tracking. Cost management for investment, piece and assembly costs continually tracked throughout development Design Verification Plans Engineering Change Control Live Weight Management Tracking Concern System Full Test and Development management, including clients internal requirements, and legal and certification compliance. Purchasing Control Detailed Client Project Review Meetings; reporting against project deliverables; costs, project timing, risks, engineering performance etc. Advanced Project Gateway System ![]() IT Systems, Data Management and Intellectual Property SecurityWe accept and issue CAD data files in the usual industry packages, for the manufacture of prototypes and production tooling. We have structured our business systems to ensure that protecting our client’s intellectual property and maintaining confidentiality is core to the way we operate. Without this confidence we would be unable to operate in the business we do, where day-to-day we are discussing with clients their ideas and innovations.A number of specific systems we have in place are designed to protect IPOur offices are all fully secure and have security systems in place, including key-pad entry. Our CAD data is backed up daily and the system server is backed up weekly. We provide non-disclosure agreements to all clients before discussing their projects. We are also happy to sign clients own NDA’s if this is what they prefer. We always ensure we have NDA’s in place with any of the global technology partners and suppliers we engage. We often advise clients of ways to help them protect their IP, especially in respect to their manufacturing strategy. In China where this is especially difficult, we have a lot of knowledge and can advise clients of best practice that well known companies use. |
